Sakana Ichiba: Seafood Restaurant Right in the Center of Fukuoka’s Downtown Area!
It can sometimes be hard to go back to work or schools after a long break! But heading out with some friends to a restaurant in the evening can help ease you back into the daily grind. If you are looking for an eatery to do just that and take your mind of things, then Sakana Ichiba is a great option.
It is very easy to access. Just get off the subway at Akasaka station (just one stop way from Tenjin) and head-up to the ground level through exit No. 5. Walk towards the right and you will find yourself at an intersection… Cross towards the Family Mart, keep heading along the road, and you will arrive at a yakiniku restaurant called Hachi Hachi. Right beside the entrance you will notice a staircase, which will lead you up to Sakana Ichiba on the second floor. (Another major landmark to look out for is the much-loved manga store Mandarake, which is located right next door.
What makes the seafood at Sakana Ichiba so special has got to be the freshness. When you enter the restaurant, you will be struck by the huge fish tanks and open plan kitchen. All the ingredients are ready for any order that might come in. The fish inside the tanks are all shipped in directly from the Ariake and Genkai seas that surround northern Kyushu.
One of Sakana Ichiba’s most famous dishes is the “Yari-ika Iki Zukuri.” To get it ready, the chef takes a live squid straight from the tank. It’s still moving when it is served on the table! After you have finished all sashimi, the staff bring out the other parts of the squid that are prepared in a number of ways. We would recommend trying it grilled.
After the yari-ika, it is well worth trying the nigiri sushi and the sashimi platter. After all, it would be a little strange to visit a seafood restaurant and not try these kinds of dishes.
In addition to the delicious seafood, Sakana Ichiba also serves various Fukuoka local specialties, such as motsunabe (offal hotpot), yakitori (grilled skewers), mentaiko (pollock roe) and Hakata jidori (grilled chicken). The Hakata jidori is served sizzling hot on an iron griddle and is incredibly tasty. It goes great with a bowl of rice.
And do not forget to try the “Fish of the Day” dishes. The ordering process is quite interesting; the restaurant gives you three different types of fish to choose from, and then once you have made your pick you can select how you would like it cooked; steamed, grilled, or deep fried! It is a great way to end your meal and a fun idea if you are looking to try new kinds of fish!
If you are looking to try fresh fish in the center of the city, then Sakana Ichiba could be right up your street!
