Fukuoka has many attractive sightseeing spots, such as food stalls called Yatai, Canal city, Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and Fukuoka Tower, but don’t you want to go to a secret places that Social media users have found?
So, this time we will introduce you six places of “Fukuoka rare spot” recommended by Social media users found at 3,000 posts gathered at the Fukuoka Photo Contest.
⓵Nanzo-in (Kasuya district,Sasaguri)

The first thing I would like to introduce is “Nanzoin” located in Sasahikura Town, Kasuya district , about 30 minutes by car from Fukuoka city.

The Nanzoin Temple, which was opened in the Meiji era, is a tourist attraction that brings as many as 1.2 million worshipers a year,
The most instagram famous point at Nanzoin is Buddha nirvana statue.
Buddha’s nirvana statue is bronze statue of Buddha with lying down pose. Size of it is the largest Nirvana statue in the world of length 41 m, height 11 m, weight 300 t. You can see its shape from the road leading to Nanzoin.
There are many pretty spots besides Nirvana Buddha statue in Nanzoin .

These bronze statues can be seen everywhere in the Nanzoin, there are bronze statues of lovely children, or bronze statues of Buddha with very kind face.
Also, there are caves where many exhibits are lined up near Nirvana statue, so it is also recommended to walk around.
By the way, every year in November there’s Grand Sumo Kyushu tournament held with sumo stable and at that time it’s possible to see sumo wrestlers closely.

⓶Bronze statue of Galaxy Express 999 (Kitakyushu city)

Next, we will introduce “Bronze statue of 999 galaxy express ” located in Kitakyushu city, 2nd city of Fukuoka prefecture.
Actually, Kitakyushu is said to be a sacred place of animation, and it is also home to many famous cartoonists. Among them, Mr. Reiji Matsumoto who wrote the Galaxy Railway 999 And gained popularity beyond generations is also from Kitakyushu city.
The Location of this statue is suited near JR Kokura station, 20 seconds walk from entrance to Shinkansen line. You can also see other bronze statues of anime characters like Metal. It’s perfect spot for tourists who want to take a pictures of them.
Also near the bronze statue is a Kitakyushu Manga museum founded by Kitakyushu City, where you can pay the entrance fee (generally 400 yen, http://www.ktqmm.jp/about/outline) and enjoy reading as much manga as you want within opening hours.
⓷Sakurai Shrine (Itoshima)

The next rare spot is “Sakurai Shrine” located in Itoshima City where recently many people move to.

Sakurai Shrine is a shrine that has been gathering worshipers from Itoshima for a long time where Grand main shrine was built in 1625 and side shrine was created in 1632 .
Because Grand main shrine follows style of the Ise Jingu in Mie prefecture, which is known as a power spot, torii gate is also similar to Ise Jingu.
In Itoshima city there are many famous sightseeing spots such as Meotoiwa , stylish cafes along the coast which are attracting tourists through the all year. It is also famous for vegetables and producing other delicious foods ,even in the winter you can enjoy a seasonal gourmet such as oysters.
⓸Otojiro Kawakami statue (Fukuoka city,Hakata)

Fukuoka is known as a town with strong connection with the continental Asia for a long time, and also for passion for entertainment.
Even such city as Fukuoka has popular rare spot, “Kawakami Otojiro Statue” at the exit of Nakasu Kawabata Subway Station.
Kawakami was known as a musical performer / artist from Fukuoka city who played an active part in the Meiji era, and was also known as a person who made “Oppekepe song” that was hit at that time. Although it is easily missed because it is at the entrance of Kawabata shopping district, it is popular as a hidden rare spot.

Also near the Kawabata shopping district, every year in July Hakata -Gion Yamakasa Festival is held. You can see majestic floats carried which are over 10 meters high.

⓹Kamado shrine in Dazaifu

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is known as the most famous sightseeing spot in Fukuoka.
Since Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is well known for “god of study” Sugawara Michizane , many students come to visit whenever the exam season comes. It is also popular as a place of Hatsu mode (first shrine visit of the year), and many people come to visit this shrine in New Year.
There is also “Kamado shrine” known as the “god of marriage” and it’s located about twenty minutes by car from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
Since there is female “marriage god” worshiped , many local females come to visit Kamado shrine. By the way, before I met my wife I also went to pray to this shrine.
In addition shrine office was designed by famous architect and many people comes to take a photos of that place as well. If you climb bit further this mountain you’ll realize that it’s truly powerful spot full of fresh air.
⓺Tochoji temple (Fukuoka, Hakata)

Following Kyoto, Fukuoka city is known as the second largest number of temples in Japan. Therefore you can see many temples throughout the city.
Among them, “Tochoji temple” near JR Hakata Station is a spot where many locals comes to visit.

There is a five-storied pagoda and it is impressive even if it is seen from a distance. There is also a large Buddha called the Great Buddha of Fukuoka on the premises, and hell pole piece in the pedestal, which is popular among locals as well as tourists. Hell is a pretty rare spot that I also learned recently.
By the way , in close area there’s is temple called Jotenji which is known as a birth place of udon, soba and Manju. If you are fan of farinaceous products you should definitely visit this place.
